Humane society rescues shot turtle

By Erin Gladden Fort Mill Times

(Published September 12‚ 2002) - FORT MILL TOWNSHIP--When one thinks of the Humane Society, one thinks of them helping cats, dogs and other furry creatures.

But that's not the case for the York County Humane Society, which now has a turtle in its care this week.

Janet Richardson, development director for the Humane Society, said Patricia Crump called the Humane Society after her son found an injured turtle in their backyard. Crump and her son live in Tara Plantation, off Hwy. 160.

"She found it in her yard," Richardson said. "She called us and said she had a huge bleeding turtle."

Richardson said she, Dr. Patrick LaRive and Dr. Robbie Chappell went to pick up the turtle Friday. The turtle appeared to have been shot, Richardson said.

Richardson said it's a kawana, or green loggerhead, turtle.
"The turtle is doing well," Chappell said, adding that treatment will take at least a month.

LaRive, the newest member of the Humane Society's veterinary team, said the turtle's shell will be rebuilt using epoxy resin.
The turtle, now under Chappell's care at the Humane Society, will be released into the wild once its shell has been repaired.
