Only A Very Few Survive...
Submitted by Bob Pearse (CN2 News)

It's spring and for cats that often means one thing- it's mating season. The bad news is, most of the felines at York County's Animal Control will not survive.

Here's a look at some sad numbers from the York County Animal Control. Since July of last year, three-thousand, five-hundred and thirty-nine cats and kittens were taken in. Of those…three-thousand, three-hundred and 65 were put down. A mere 153 were adopted or taken in by another rescue group and 26 were reclaimed by their owners.

Approximately thirteen cats and kittens were just waiting at the York County Animal Control Center tuesday for someone to come by and give them a new home. Officials say they try to hold cats and kittens in this area of the shelter for as long as they can…But the ones who don't seem to have been domesticated are kept for only one week and then put to sleep-this includes little kittens.

One note, employees at the York County Animal Control agree that having to put down innocent animals is the hardest part of their job and it's one they would rather not have to do.

Unfortunately, there's not any room at the Humane Society of York County for cats or kittens right now either. They have around 100 felines in their care. There's a simple and inexpensive way to stop the cat over-population problem…spaying a female cat costs a mere $27.50. Just call the humane society at 802-0925 for more information.
